I assume you are talking about a telpe mirror. I have read a lot and ground one small mirror some years ago but did it all by hand. If I remember properly, some of the features you want in a grinding machine are the ability to change the stroke's length as well as the path it takes across the surface (radial, cordial).

Me and my pal Marc have a M-o-M each. It can handle mirrors up to 20". One is now loaded with a 20" mirror. It'll be a f/4.5. To feed the carbo we work with peristaltic pumps. Fully automated. When the container runs out of slurry the M-o-M stops. Containers completely filled with carbo the M-o-M will run for about 1.5 hours.

While I was in the construction process of the Mirror-O-Matic I had ordered a 10" an 8" plate glass kit. Here is the 10" ready for fine grinding. The only part I could not find locally was the toggle pad used in the overarm assembly. This part I ordered from Reid Tool Supply Company. The 8" came at a later time then the 10".

Stephen, I have not run a surface grinder before. I'm about 3 hours from you. It would be well within budget, but I don't want to put a lot of money into it as it will be a low use machine for me. I'm not sure I'd even repaint it after cleaning it up (But I would likely fully disassemble and check it out).
